Elijah Baldwin is a fourth generation descendant from the Puritan immigrant Henry Baldwin to Woburn, Mass in the 1630's or 1640's. (He is Elijah > Daniel > Daniel > Benjamin > Henry). His maternal lines include other well known New England Puritan immigrants of the 1630's and 1640's: Knight, Partridge, Rose, Knowlton, Backus, Stark, Richardson, Green, Seabury, Allyn, Tracy, Kemp, Rogers, Spencer, and Holloway.
Elijah Baldwin was married three times and had sixteen (known) children. His blood is carried by thousands of descendants in America today, sprinkled from coast to coast.
His Revolutionary War Service serving in Connecticut units from his hometown: Mansfield in then Windham (now Tolland) County, Conn is listed below:
1) He initially enlisted as a private April 19, 1775 (a few days short of his nineteenth birthday) for a period of 8 months in a Company commanded by Captain James Dana. The Company was part of a Connecticut Regiment commanded by Colonel Experience Storrs.
2) At the end of this service, Elijah enlisted a second time in November or December 1775 in a second group for 13 months, again as a private. This time, his Captain was John Keyes who served under Colonel John Durkee's Connecticut Regiment.
3) At the end of this service, Elijah enlisted a third time on April 18, 1777. This time, he joined the seventh company of the second battalion in the first Regiment in the Connecticut line. The Captain of this third group was Captain John Shumway. The regiment was initially commanded by Colonel Jedediah Huntington but was later commanded by Colonel Josiah Starr. Elijah served as a sergeant during this term.
The battles he was in included Battle of Long Island, Monmouth, Great Plains and probably others.
He married first, Asenath Allen on Sep 28, 1780 in Mansfield, Windham Co, Conn. She bore him four children: Elijah Jr, Asenath, Joseph and Selden. At some point during this marriage before 1789, the family moved to Vermont, near current day Dover. Asenath died Jul 20, 1789, age 31, and is buried in Dover. Asenath's children carry the blood of more English Puritan immigrants to America from the 1630's and 1640's: Allen, Cary, Bushnell, Leffingwell, and Hayward.
He married second, Patty/Polly Richardson, of whom little is known, about 1790. She bore Elijah 10 children: Patty/Polly, Phebe, John, Rufus, Asa, Asha, Orra, Ezra, Orlando, and Ira. She died Feb 23, 1812 in Dover, Windham Co, Vermont.
He married third, Sally Hall, of whom little is known, on Jan 7, 1813, and bore Elijah two more children: Ephina and Sally. She died Jul 3, 1833 in Dover.
Elijah was known as a hard taskmaster. He was known to be extremely religious and raised the kids in a very strict household. One child, Orlando, is said to have left home "never to return again", after receiving a whipping as a teenager.
Elijah's Revolutionary War pension papers are on file in the National Archives.
Elijah died on Jul 5, 1841, age 85, in Dover, Windham Co, Vermont.

There are also some Baldwin stones, and here we are reminded of an unusual family tragedy. On a single stone there are engraved the names and ages of four children of Ezra and Lydia Baldwin, all of whom died on one day, September 23, 1816, in a diphtheria epidemic: Adeline, 16, George, 5, Hanna R. 1, and Sarah, 3.
