Ezra was born to Elijah and Patty/Polly (Richardson) Baldwin of Dover, Vermont. Ezra was a sixth generation American, descendant of the Puritan immigrants in the 1630's and 1640's. Ezra Baldwin's Baldwin line of ascent is Ezra-6, Elijah-5, Daniel-4, Daniel-3, Benjamin-2, Henry-1 Baldwin of Woburn, Mass, the immigrant.

Ezra married 1) Sally Hall on Jun 11, 1829 in Dover, Vermont. They had Adeline and Ezra. Sally died Dec 5, 1832. He married 2) Lydia Eaton on Oct 10, 1833, when he was 28. They had nine children: Rufus Ebenezer, Henry Gilbert, Newton Holland, George Eaton (died young), Sarah Aphiah (died young), Hannah R (died young), Charles Emroy, Ella Lydia, and George Edwin.

George Eaton, Sarah Aphiah, and Hannah R, along with Adeline, a 16 year old daughter of Ezra from his first marriage, all died from a sickness within a week in 1846 and was a disastrous blow to the parents. Rufus, Henry, Newton, and George Edwin all went west with Ezra after the Civil War. Kansas. Ella moved with the family to Iowa, married there and stayed there.

The family moved to Delaware County, Iowa around the time of the Civil War. Lydia died there Feb 7, 1872. Ezra came west to live near his boys and their families in Ottawa Co, Kansas in 1874, and died there on July 5, 1892. He is buried in the family cemetery near Ada, Kansas.
