John was the son of William and Rebecca (McGinnis) Bonnell. When a young boy, moved with parents to Bluff Point, Jay County, Indiana from Ohio. Married Susan Jane Collins on April 13, 1859 in Jay Co., Indiana.
Civil War Veteran. Drafted to Company B, Indiana 23rd Infantry Regiment on 27 Oct 1864. Mustered out on 23 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY. John Bonnell descends from a long list of veterans. His paternal grandfather, Aaron Bonnell and great-grandfather, Benjamin Bonnell were Revolutionary War Patriots with Benjamin serving as a body guard to George Washington. Maternal grandfather, John O. McGinnis was both a Revolutionary War Patriot and veteran of War of 1812.
John Bonnell moved north to Hoosier Valley, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan about 1880-81 with wife and children.
John died in 1917 and grave was unmarked for 21 years until his granddaughter, Lu Harkins arranged to have a VA stone placed in 1938.
