The former Margaret J. Barden was born Aug. 10, 1887, in the Town of Pine River. She was married Feb. 2, 1908, in Merrill to Frank Van Slate, who died Nov 4, 1959. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Van Slate taught school in Ladysmith and at the Plamann School in the Town of Schley. She was a graduate of the Marathon County Normal School in Wausau. She was named Lincoln County's Centennial queen and was well known for her poetry and art work. Mrs. Van Slate was a member of the Wisconsin Rural Artists Association and the Wisconsin Historical Society. She was chaplain of the Merrill Golden Agers.
Survivors include three daughters, two sons, a sister, a brother, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
