SIMON SMITH DIES SUDDENLY

CIVIL WAR VET, WHO WALKED TO HERSHEY, PASSES ON.

Simon S. Smith, 88 year-old Civil War veteran, who lived at the Pitzer House, Chambersburg Street, for many years, was found dead in bed at the home of his sister, Mrs. Augustus Bittinger, Hagerstown, this morning. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Mr. Smith, who had been visiting his sister for three weeks returned to Gettysburg for Memorial Day, May 30, returning to Hagerstown after the exercises.

Mr. Smith, a native of Adams County, was a member of the 165th Pennsylvania artillery during the Civil War. He was a member of Corporal Skelly post, No. 9, G.A.R., here.

WALKED TO CEMETERY

The veteran preferred to walk rather than ride in an automobile and on Memorial Day he refused offers to ride to the cemetery, but walked there from the Pitzer House. He sat on the rostrum with the other veterans. Several years ago, when members of Corporal Skelly post held an outing at Hershey Park, five miles west of here, Mr. Smith walked there from Gettysburg, rather than ride in an automobile.

Surviving are four sisters: Mrs. Laura Snyder, Steinwehr Avenue; Mrs. Fannie Myers, Fairfield; Mrs. Augustus Bittinger, Hagerstown; and Mrs. Daniel Kuhn, Cashtown; and two brothers, William Smith, Lewisville, Ohio; and James Smith, Milledgeville, Illinois.

The body was brought to the Bender funeral home here. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
