Alanson W Snyder, one of the valiant band of heroes who marched with General Sherman "from Altanta to the Sea" passed away at his home in this city early Monday morning. He had been ill only a week, death being due to a nervous breakdown. Deceased was born in Wayne county, New York, on Sept 14, 1839. When he was five years old his parents moved to Lake county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Eleanor Patrick at Crown Point, Ind, in 1861, and the following year he enlisted in Co A, 99th Indiana Infantry, and served three years under both Grant and Sherman in some of the hardest-fought battles of the war. After he was mustered out of service, Mr Snyder and family moved to Olmsted county, where he farmed for five years. In 1872 the family moved to this city and Mr Snyder took up firing on the Northwestern road. Two years later he was made engineer and severed in that capacity until his retirement in 1904. On May 2, 1911, he and Mrs. Snyder celebrated their golden wedding. They were the parents of 12 children, 11 of whom with the mother now mourn the death of an honored husband and father.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the Congregational church, Rev S H Smith officiating. There was a large attendance present to pay final tribute of respect to a brave soldier and good citizen. Delegations from the Masonic order, the Grand Army of the Republic and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers were present as special escort to the remains. Following the funeral services the burial took place in Woodville cemetery.
