Some sources, such as "Taming Texas" by Stephen L. Moore say Sophia, the infant daughter of Capt. William Turner Sadler and Mary Murchison Sadler was one of the victims when a band of Indians attacked the home of John Edens on San Pedro Creek near the present day town of Augusta on the night of Oct 18, 1838. W.T. Sadler's wife, Mary Murchison Sadler was killed along with at least 8 others but many question whether the Sadlers had a child killed there. Following the massacre, Sadler wrote a letter to Mirabeau Lamar in which he said his wife was killed in the attack but made no mention of a child.

Besides the 9 or 10 killed, two women were seriously wounded but survived. The four men who were present escaped unharmed. Most of the husbands/fathers had not yet returned after fighting the Kickapoos on Oct 16, just two days before the attack on those gathered for safety at John Edens' home.
