Mary Murchison Sadler, her infant daughter Sophia, her stepmother Sarah Hall Murchison, and half brother Lycurgus Murchison were among the ten women and children killed when a band of Indians attacked the home of John Edens on San Pedro Creek near the present day town of Augusta on the night of Oct 18, 1838. Two other women were seriously wounded but survived. Mary's father was Martin Murchison, one of the four men who were present, yet escaped unharmed. Most of the husbands/fathers had not yet returned after fighting the Kickapoos on Oct 16, just two days before the attack on those gathered for safety at John Edens' home. Mary was the young wife of Captain W.T. Sadler.
