Mrs. Mary C. Pence, 85, widow of the Rev. Samuel Pence of Mill Creek, and mother of Wilbur S. Pence. Rockingham County Superintendent of Schools died at 2:10 yesterday at t h e home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Paul Showalter of Grottoes, following a lingering illness.

Mrs. Pence was the surviving member of the family of Jacob and Elizabeth Harshbarger and was bom July 18, 1869. She spent her entire life in the Mill Creek section of Rockingham County and was loved by all who knew her. She was a faithful member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren and served the church as long as she was able.

In 1891 she was united in marriage to the Rev. Samuel Pence who preceded her in death in 1945.

Surviving are eleven children, Mrs. J. W. (Elizabeth) Sandy of Waynesboro; Mrs. Grace Geiser of College Park, Md.; Jasper Pence of Mt. Crawford; Charles Pence of Kecoughton; Mrs. J. Paul (Bertha) Showalter of Grottoes; Mrs. J. M. (Ruth) Garber of Waynesboro; Mrs. Mary H. Pence of Washington; Wilbur S. Pence of Harrisonburg; Jacob Pence of Washington; Mrs. W. J. (Esther) Garber of Waynesboro; and Mrs. Sherman (Frances) Dickerson of Alexandria. She also leaves 14 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Thursday morning at eleven o'clock. The Rev. I. S. Long of Harrisonburg, assisted by the Rev. C. O. Showalter will have charge of the services and burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at Long's funeral home until 9:45 Thursday morning when it will be removed to the church to lie in state until the hour of the services.

Active pallbearers will be: Hubert Cllne, Earl Cline, Herman Diehl, Edwin Showalter, Virgil Pence and Edgar Garber. Honorary pallbearers will be: Dr. J. C. Harshbarger, Dr. G. G. Tanner, Sam Null, L. L. Morris, Charles P.Long, Kemper Jarrels, Rev. Wilbur Garger, W. G. Wilberger, Ben Meyerhoeffer, Marvin Hartman, Hunter Saufley, Harry Huffman, Otis Bowman and T. I. Bowman.

Relatives are asked to meet at Mrs. J. Paul Showalter's home at 10:30 Thursday morning. Active and honorary pallbearers are asked to meet at the church at 10:45 Thursday morning.
