HON. GEO. W. DAVIS.
One of the Leading Merchants of Ocean Springs, Miss.

New Orleans Times - Democrat
Mr. George W. Davis was born on Davis Bayou, in Jackson county, Miss., on April 17, 1842. He is the oldest son of the late Samuel Davis, one of the first settlers on the Gulf coast, and who came there from Georgia in 1823. The father followed farming for a livelihood, and was successful in his walks of life.
Mr. Geo. W. Davis received his education in the common schools of Jackson county. In early life he united with the Baptist church, has been a prominent member ever since, and is at present one of its deacons. He is one of the main supporters of his church at Ocean Springs, having contributed largely to the erection of the present house of worship.
November 12, 1868, he was married to Miss Maggie Bradford, of the same county. In 1878 Mr. Davis engaged in mercantile pursuits at Bluff Creek, Miss., remaining there nine years. He then located at Ocean Springs in the same business, associating with him his younger brother, E,S, Davis, under the firm name of Davis Bros. In these thirteen years they have continued to do a large and a lucrative business, enjoying the confidence of all. Mr. Davis has represented his county in the State Legislature from January 1892, to the present time, his term of office expiring January 1, 1896. He was county treasurer from 1876 to 1877, filling the position most acceptably. He was subsequently elected as a member of the Board of Supervisors, and proved himself quite useful in that capacity.
He is a member of Castle Lodge No 66, K. of P., at Ocean Springs. Mr. Davis is a Christian gentleman, fairly entitled to the respect and affection which his long and honorable career has won for him.
