Mary Ann was born 1824 in Ohio, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Osborn) Edgerton. She married William Kelsay November 11, 1842, near Marion, Indiana. He died in service during the Civil War and was buried at Fort Heiman, Kentucky. However, the graves were moved and his final burial location is unknown.

Mary Ann was living with her daughter Sarah Ann and family in Benton Township, Fremont County, Iowa at the time of the 1880 census. She sold some land there in 1883, not long before she and Sarah left.

She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. A. Murray. She is buried in the Norcatur Cemetery. A simple funeral home marker, set into concrete, says "Mrs. Kelsey 1889." She was survived by the daughter, Sarah Ann, and two sons, John and Samuel.

The surname is variously spelled as Kelsey, Kelsay and Kalsay.
