Son of William A. and Martha Hemphill. 1st husband of Bertie Baker. Sam and Bertie had their first child in Parker County before moving to Amarillo where he worked as a railroad investigator. They had three children while in Amarillo. One month after a fourth child was born Sam was killed at work shortly after stepping off of a train. Bertie received 800 dollars from the railroad and returned to Amarillo with the children after bringing Sam back to Newberry for burial.
