Union Civil War veteran. He enlisted in Company C 12th Iowa Volunteer Infantry at the age of 18 on October 6, 1861. He was discharged at Memphis, Tenn on January 20, 1866.
The 12th Iowa served in the west under Grant and Sherman. They fought in more than ten major engagements including Shiloh and Vicksburg.
Regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 76 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 8 Officers and 260 Enlisted men by disease. Total 348.
After the war Hamlin lived in Nebraska, Idaho, and Oregon and made a living as a blacksmith. He died of appendicitis while on a business trip in Tacoma. He was survived by his third wife Ella.
