According to the book by Judy Carlson Buried on the Prairies of Knox County

"Lorenzo and Caroline Wellman left Fayette County, Iowa in the winter of 1879 with the promise of a better place to live, and land to own. Lorenzo filed for a homestead on the southeast quarter of Section 27 in Walnut Grove township. This land was described as being an awful sight. A recent fire had turned the prairie black and there were no trees anywhere except along the rivers. With them they brought their granddaughter, Estella "Stella" Agnes Hamlin. Stella's mother was Louisia Agnes, the only daughter of Lorenzo and Caroline, who died shortly after the birth of Stella in Iowa.

One year later in the December of 1880, tragedy struck the Wellman homestead when little Stella died from the diphtheria epidemic. Lorenzo built a casket for her and took her to the nearest train station in Creighton, with the intentions of shipping her remains to Oelwein, Iowa to be buried beside her mother. When he got there he found that the railroad company would not transport the body of a person who had died from a communicable disease and he had to bring his little granddaughter home to be buried on the homestead. Lorenzo chose the name for the burial area, "Hope Cemetery" because, not being a particularly religious man, he could only hope that his daughter and granddaughter had been reunited in a better place in the hereafter. Over the next few years, other neighbors and friends were to be buried in the cemetery. In 1886, Lorenzo Wellman's beloved wife Caroline died and was laid to rest in the cemetery near Stella. In 1887 Lorenzo deeded three acres of land to the Hope Cemetery Association for the cemetery."
