MRS. W. A. HANKS
Mrs. W. A. Hanks, who had been a resident of Russell for nearly forty years, passed away at that place on Friday, November 21, 1930, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 25 days, after an illness of several months.
Funeral services were held the following Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Russell, conducted by Rev. J. D. Clark, after which interment took place in the Russell cemetery.
Laura Ada Sturtz, daughter of Josiah and Susan Sturtz, was born on July 27, 1864 in Adamsville, Muskingum county, Ohio, where she grew to young womanhood and was married on September 16, 1884 to Wm. A. Hanks. The following year they came to Clarke county, Iowa and resided on a farm for a few years. In 1892 they located on a farm near Russell in Lucas county, and about twenty four years ago, in 1906, they moved to Russell and this place had since been her home.
She is survived by her husband and by six children and several grandchildren. The children are: Warren Lloyd Hanks of Lucas; Mrs. Ada May Kenton, Mrs. Nora Force, Arlie Lester and Nellie Pearl Hanks, all of Russell; and Mrs. Velma Spitler, of Columbus, Indiana. Besides the husband, children and grandchildren, Mrs. Hanks is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Anna Thresh, of Broadway, Ohio; Mrs. Maggie Marquand, Mrs. Rose Marquand and Mrs. Cora Ross, all of West Lafayette, Ohio.
In early girlhood deceased united with the Bethesda Methodist church near Adamsville, Ohio, and has lived an earnest, faithful christian life. After coming to Russell she transferred her membership to the Methodist church there and has been one of the faithful workers in the church organizations, including the Ladies Aid and the Home Missionary Societies, and was president of the latter society for many years, resigning when ill health compelled her to give up her work.
Her demise is mourned by a large circle of friends who will extend sincere sympathy to those who left in bereavement.
