WILLIAM A. HANKS

William Anderson Hanks, son of Jeremiah and Teresa Swank Hanks was born near Adamsville, Muskingum County, Ohio, February 8, 1861, and departed from this life February 9, 1935, at his home in Russell, Iowa, aged seventy-four years and one day.

During the Civil War, his father was engaged in the conflict. He returned home with typhoid fever and died within a few days of the mother, who had contracted the fever from nursing her husband.

Seven children were left orphaned. William was three years old at the time of the loss of his parents. He lived and grew to manhood in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sutton, who spared no pains in parental love.

March 17, 1881, in company with relatives, he came to Osceola, Iowa, where he spent some time. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Hanks returned to Ohio, where he married Miss Laura Sturtz, September 13, 1885. Again, in company with his bride, he returned to Clark County, where he resided on a farm.

Some years later, in March of 1892, Mr. Hanks, his wife and three small children moved to a farm near Russell, Iowa, where they lived until they established a home in the town of Russell. For many years he was manager of the Russell Telephone exchange. Later he retired from active business but continued to reside in the same location.

November 21, 1930, Mrs. Hanks passed to the Great Beyond. Mr. Hanks leaves to mourn their loss two brothers and two sisters: Mr. George Hanks, Akron, Ohio; Mr. Jerry Hanks, Newark, Ohio; Mrs. Matilda Aler, Dresden, Ohio; and Mrs. Ruth Slater, Russell, Iowa; two sons and four daughters; Mr. Warren Hanks, Chariton, Iowa; Mrs. Ada Kenton and Mrs. Nora Force, both of Russell, Iowa; Mrs. Velma Spitler, of Columbus, Indiana; Mr. Arlie and Miss Nellie Hanks, who reside in the home; five grandchildren; Irma, Ardys, Paul, Donald and Wendell Force, besides a host of friends and other relatives.

Mr. Hanks kind, gentle and quiet disposition made our lives a little richer. We will always cherish the memory of one to whom we could look for assistance in time of need. One whose integrity we never questioned.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock Monday, February 11, conducted by the Rev. Mitchell and interment was made in the Russell Cemetery.
