Alda was one of three children born to Elihu and Emeline Ash Masters. She had two brothers.

At the age of 21, she married Charles Nally. The couple had five children, Harry, Amy, Velma, Leona and Charles Jr.

Alda was raised on a farm. Even after she and Charles moved to Newell, WV, she worked a garden to provide vegetables throughout the year for her family.

She died of heart failure.
