Prominent West Duluthian Dies After a Long Illness
Michael Jacoby, 54 years old, for the past ten years a resident of West Duluth, died at 7 o'clock last evening at St. Mary's hospital after an illness of over two years. The deceased was well known in this end of the city, having recently been employed as clerk in the city assessor's office. He was a member of the Modern Samaritans and the Odd Fellows.
The deceased is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. They are: Arthur and Hugo, residing at 5721 Huntington street, Mrs. Henry J. Colgraff of Chicago and Mrs. George H. Wilbur of Macy, Ariz. The funeral will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Flood & Horgan undertaking rooms. the body will be taken to St. Paul tomorrow evening for interment.
Michael is a native of Luxemburg Germany and was in school there until the family came to America in September 1874. They settled on sections 4 and 5, T. 110, R. 11W in Wabasha County, Minnesota. His father, Michael (Sr.) died there on September 10, 1882. The old homestead remained in possession of one of the sons (probably August JACOBY).
Michael entered the drygoods house of Lucas Kuehn in Wabasha, Wabasha County, Minnesota in the spring of 1875. He remained there until he purchased an interest in his own store. Michael was a general merchant on the corner of Main and Pembroke Streets in Wabasha, Wabasha County, Minnesota. The store had an entrance on both streets and fronted 75 feet on Main Street and 23 feet on Pembroke Street. The business occupied one floor and basement and there were three employees. This house was started in 1877 by Lindem, Satori & Co. Mr. Jacoby bought out Satori in 1879 and subsequently purchased the other interests. He became the sole proprietor in 1882.
He married Rosa FUNKE of Glasgow Township on December 31, 1878. They have two children together; Emma and Lizzie
