August was a capable and successful farmer of Glasgow Township, where he resided for many years. He was brought up to farming, an occupation he followed in Luxembourg before coming to America. He farmed in Luxembourg for all but one year, when he worked in a flour mill. On June 5, 1874, he arrived at Read's Landing, Wabasha County, Minnesota, USA.

He worked one season as a farm hand on Pepin Hill, and after his parents arrived in Wabasha County in September 1874, he joined them and operated their farm. He has been a hard and successful worker, and has acquired a competency. For three years he was a member of the town board.

On February 28, 1883, he married Margaret MEYER, daughter of Johann Peter and Elizabeth MEYER. Margaret was born in Luxembourg on October 4, 1861. She came to America in March, 1882, with her brother William.

August turned the harder work on the farm over to his sons Frank J. and Nicholas in his latter years; he still performed the light tasks though.

He and his wife were reared in the Catholic faith, but they became liberal in their religious views. In politics, August was independent; he was not bound to any party, but considered first the character of the respective candidates.
