War Department -- Adjutant General's Office, Washington DC, March 30, 1880
Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 245,082, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.
It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that Moses H. Devault was enrolled on the 6th day of August, 1862, at St. Clairsville, in Co. "B" 98th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 20 day of August, 1862, at Camp Steubenville, in Co. "B", 98 Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. "B" of that Regiment from Aug 20 to Oct 31, 1862, he is reported missing since battle of Chaplin Heights Oct 8, 1862 - Nov and Dec 1862. Taken prisoner same place and date and paroled. He was in action at Chaplin Heights KY. Oct 8 1862 - Jan and Feb 1863 present. Mar and Apr 1863, Absent sick in Regtl Hospl tent at time of muster. May and June, present and so reported to August 31, 1864. Sept and Oct. 1864. Died of wounds received in battle at Jonesboro, Ga September 1/64. He "Died Sept 3, 1864 in hospital in the field near Jonesboro Ga by reason of wound." Regt was in action near that place September 1 1864.
Prisoner of War Records furnish no information
Inv. of Effects reports him died in Hospl in the Field near Jonesboro Ga Sept 3 1864, which date is accepted as correct.
