He was the youngest of the 6 children of Charles Edwin Bowers and Alice May Bowers.
His brothers and sisters were Zora, Nellie, Jess, Ellis and Ruby.
He joined the US Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor and served aboard the the destroyer USS Bagley from 1942 to 1945.
(The Bagley saw action at Guadalcanal, and she was credited with saving the lives of several hundred sailors when USS ASTORIA, USS VINCENNES, and USS QUINCY suffered under the enemy attack.)
After being honorably discharged from the Navy he came to San Francisco where he worked as a truck driver, for companies that include Hamms Beer and Delta Trucking Lines.
He married Cynthia Bowers in 1962 and had two children.
