John Yeates was born at Millville, the son of Frederick and Sarah Webb Yeates. After John completed his education at Millville School, he attended Utah State Agricultural College at Logan.

On December 1, 1897, he married Elizabeth Jones Bailey in the Logan Temple. She was the daughter of Charles R. Bailey and Hannah Jones and was born June 1, 1878, at Wellsville. She received her education there, and from her youth she was active in the auxiliaries of the LDS Church. Her religion was the guiding factor in her life.

John was first employed at Hansen Creamery as a cheese maker, and he became so proficient that he was called to teach this art in both Utah and Idaho. He was a farmer and also a butcher. He was a member of the Ward Choir and served as President for many years, and he was Chairman of the Old Folks Committee. He was an excellent penman and a great mathematician.

John and Elizabeth were parents of: Hannah Reta (Claudius George Stanton), Lorna (George Robinson), Venda (Clarence M. Yates), John Byron (Bertha Clegg), Charles Bailey (Ella Erickson), Harry Van (LaRue Garr), Wilma (Jackson Meyers Allen), Vern Wendell (Hazel Richards) and Helen (Charles Cole Sorensen).
