Virgil M. Bigg of 610 N. 2nd Ave., a Sterling resident for three-quarters of a century, died Sunday in Logan County Hospital. He was 75.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from the First United Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Ivan E. Rundus, D.D. officiating.
Masonic graveside rites by Sterling Lodge No. 54 A.F.&A.M. and burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.
The Bigg family homesteaded in the Pawnee Creek area north of Willard and west of Sterling in 1908. Mr. Bigg was born June 25, 1910 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of James T. and Hazel Rowley Bigg and came to Sterling when two weeks old. He worked as a conductor for Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (now Burlington Northern Railroad) for 33 years. In recent years he had been employed by Chaney-Walters Funeral Home.
He graduated from Sterling High School in 1930 and married Elsie Irene Shumway June 25, 1932 in Simla.Mr. Bigg was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and ruling elder.
He was a member of Sterling Lodge No. 54 A.F.&A.M., a 32nd
degree Mason, Royal Arch Masons Sterling Chapter No. 47, Royal and Select Masters Sterling Council No.19 * Past Commander Knights Templar Sterling Commandery No.35, Colorado Consistory No. 1,Denver and White Shrine of
Jerusalem No.3.He served as president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen No. 796 and United Transportation
Union No. 1136 for many years and was a member of Burlington Veterans Railroad Association.
Mr. Bigg was also a member of the Logan County Historical Society, American Association of Retired Persons and Senior Citizens Club.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elsie Irene Bigg of Sterling; three sons, Stanley D. Bigg of Kearney, Neb., James E. Bigg of Irving, Texas and Garry 0. Bigg of Lexington, Ky.; three brothers, J. Craig Bigg of Sun City, Calif., Francis Bigg of Sterling and Duane Bigg of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Smith and Mrs. Ruby Nell Green, both of Sterling and Mrs. Virginia Jackman of Craig; eight grand children and one great-grandson.
Chaney-Walters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
