Henry L. Dow Lighthouse Keeper Dies

Mathews, June 8 - Henry Luther Dow, 71, keeper of New Point Comfort Lighthouse 34 years, died unexpectedly at his residence at Shadow last night.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Hattie Brooks Dow of Shadow, a daughter, Mrs. Grady Brooks of Richmond, three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Eddie Brooks of Portsmouth.

Mr. Dow began his duties as lighthouse keeper in 1920 when the light in the Chesapeake Bay landmark was converted from kerosene to acetylene. Several years ago, before his retirement in 1954, he saw the light converted to automatic-electricity.

He was chairman of the board of stewards of Beulah Methodist Church, a past master of Oriental Lodge 20, AF & AM, of Mathews; chaplain of the lodge at the time of his death; a member of Naoman Tribe III, Improved Order of Red Men, at Port Haywood, member of the Mathews Lodge 82, Junior Order United American Mechanics, and of the Mathews Ruritan Club.

The body will remain at the Foster Funeral Home at Mathews until 2 p.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. at the St. Paul's Methodist Church at Susan, conducted by the Rev. E. C. Smith, assisted by the Rev. W. C. Diggs. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery at Susan with Masonic rites.

Pallbearers will be George Dow, Elwood Dow, Elmer Brooks, Eldred Stewart, Lester Hudgins, John C. Miller, Maxwell Owens and Herbert K. Taylor.
