Eugene ‘Jack' ‘Blackie' Pendergrass, 87, passed away in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born in Trail, Missouri on October 24, 1921 to the late Edward and Minnie (Orwick) Pendergrass.

He came to Marion in 1941 and started working for Anaconda Wire in 1942 until his retirement in 1979. He was a Navy Seaman First Class and served from 1944 to 1946. Mr. Pendergrass married Mary Helen Martin on August 17, 1946. She survives. He enjoyed carpentry work and was also a talented furniture craftsman. Many people entrusted him to work in their Marion homes throughout the years.

Survivors include his wife Mary Helen Martin; two sons, Lewis Edward (Angie) Pendergrass, Morehead, Ky., Larry Gene (Susan) Pendergrass, Fort Wayne; seven brothers, Elmer Pendergrass, Indicott, Wash., Estel (Thelma) Pendergrass, Dora, Mo., Paul Pendergrass, Billings, Mont., Charly (Louise) Pendergrass, West Plains, Mo., Dale (Betty) Pendergrass, Veradale, Wash., Eli Pendergrass, Kechi, Kan., Larry Dean (Sandra) Pendergrass, Dora, Mo.; six sisters, Geneva (Gene) Johnson, Bourbon, Mo., Doraline Barnes, Springfield, Mo., Annabelle Newton, Zanoni, Mo., Pauline (J.D.) Thompson, East Peoria, Ill., Una Uhlman, Mountain Grove, Mo., Shirley (Robert) Hart, Licking, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Jill, Huntington, W.V., Jerald, Chesapeake, Ohio, Jeffrey, Portsmouth, Ohio, Brittany, Morehead, Ky., Leigh Ann (James), Seattle, Wash., Laura, Cary, Ill., Amy, Fort Wayne; 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Pendergrass was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Minnie Pendergrass; and stepmother, Nola Freeman Parsley Pendergrass; twin daughters, Mary Lou and Carolyn Sue Pendergrass; five brothers, Claude, Carl, Ronnie Pendergrass and Carl and T.J. Parsley; three sisters, Verlie and Orpha Freeman, Dorothy Abbott.
