NEW HOLSTEIN – Mrs. Margaretha Drews, one of New Holsteins pioneer women, passed away on Saturday at the old homestead, now owned by her son, John Drews. She reached the age of 78 years, 4 months and 2 days. Death was due to gangrene, after eight weeks’ illness.

The decedent, nee Platt, was born in Bergenhusen, Germany, Aug. 29, 1843 and came to America at the age of eight years with her parents, who settled in New Holstein. She was married in 1861 to Mr. Drews who preceded her in death some years ago.

Of the 14 children born of the union, eight, three sons and five daughters are living, as follows; John of New Holstein, August of Schleswig, William of Wittenberg,Mrs. Louis Schram of Wittenberg, Emma Pingel of Hayton, Hanina Schoen of Stockbridge, Margareta Schmeisser of Chilton and Hanna Kuehl of New Holstein. She also leaves 43 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Thede.

Mrs. Drews and her husband were charter members of the Ref. Church. She was also a charter member of the Ref. Church Frauenberein.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, services being held in the church, Rev. a. C. Plappert officiating. Interment in the village cemetery.
