Helen Elizabeth Leonard Collins, 66, passed away at home in Greensboro, NC on the night of April 30, 1988. Helen was born Della Louise Foust on 9-15-1921 to Ada Louise Lackey Foust and Samuel Wesley Foust. Born the 12th child to a 39 year old mother of only 9 surviving children, her mother developed "heart dropsey" now know as congestive heart failure. When Della was three (3) days old, Ada died. At four (4) days old, Della was adopted by Sam Foust's boss in Revolution Mill, Jesse Smith Leonard and his wife Sadie Horner. They changed her name to Helen Elizabeth Leonard. Three of her siblings, Ted, Ruby, and Lena, were put in a Masonic orphanage in Oxford, NC. Another son, Herbert Foust, 9 at the time of Ada's death, did not want to go to the orphanage, so he ran away from home. The 3 younger children remained at the orphanage until 21 years of age. It was an open adoption where she got to stay in contact with her biological siblings. She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. Her parents were charter members. Helen graduated from Rankin High School in 1938. She then attended Kings Business College graduating with high honors. She went to work as a stenographer at Hooper Holmes. A job at Retail Credit opened and she jumped at the chance. She remained at Retail Credit, now known as Eqifax, until her retirement at 55. She kept returning to work at Eqifax until her untimely death at 66 on April 30, 1988 from congestive heart failure. Helen married twice. First she married Ernest William Martin (Sr.) and had 3 children, Barbara Jean (Bobbi), Ernest William (Bill) Martin Jr. and Charles "Glenn" Martin. They divorced in 1953 and she married Sidney Cairey Collins. They did not have any children. She is survived by her husband, Sidney Collins and 3 children Bobbi Cecil (Eddie), Bill Martin, and Glenn (Martha) Martin, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She is missed by all who knew her. (bio by Bobbi Cecil)
