Philip Turpin was born in Kentucky, a son of Rev. Henry and Elizabeth Turpin. His parents lived in Mercer, Garrard, Ohio, and Grayson counties Kentucky. Philip was married on 25 Jan 1800 in Ohio County, Kentucky to Mary "Polly" Shain, a daughter of Edward Shain. Philip and Polly had 5 children: Parmelia "Milly", Jane, William, Edmund, and Madison. According to the History of Macon County Illinois, the Turpin family moved to Macon County, Illinois in 1831.

On 22 Jan 1924 a "History of the Turpin Family of Macon County, Illinois" was published in the Decatur Review of (Decatur, IL). This was part of a continuing series call "The Story of Decatur" Chapter 52, by E. B. Hitchcock. The following is a quote from that article:
VALUABLE RELICS
Edmund Turpin was the son of Philip Turpin, who was the son of Rev. Henry Turpin, who had come from England in early colonial days. His great great grandson, Edmund Turpin Roby, has as a treasured keepsake the saddlebags which the minister brought with him to this country.
Note: Thus far, my own research does not agree with the statement that Rev. Henry Turpin personally came from England, but rather that he was of English descent.
