Henry Turpin was born about 1755, a son of Thomas Turpin Sr. and Anne Ligon. His father, stepmother and family moved from Virginia to Bute, later Franklin, County, North Carolina in about 1769. They resided there until 1788, and by 1789, The Turpin family had relocated to Mercer County, Kentucky.

Henry married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) probably in North Carolina in about 1775, and they had three children: Phillip, Mary Ann, and Sarah. In 1799, Henry and Elizabeth Turpin deeded 50 acres of land in Garrard County, Kentucky to John McMurtry. By 1802, the family was in Ohio County, Kentucky. Henry is found in the 1810 census and 1815 tax list of Grayson County, Kentucky. I have not located him after that date; however, his children Phillip and Mary Ann with their spouses relocated to Macon and Sangamon Counties, Illinois respectively.

22 Jan 1924 "History of the Turpin Family of Macon County, Illinois" Decatur Review (Decatur, IL). This was Chapter 52 of a continuing series called "The Story of Decatur" by E. B. Hitchcock. The following is a quote from that article:
VALUABLE RELICS
Edmund Turpin was the son of Philip Turpin, who was the son of Rev. Henry Turpin, who had come from England in early colonial days. His great great grandson, Edmund Turpin Roby, has as a treasured keepsake the saddlebags which the minister brought with him to this country.
Note from S. J. Monaghan: Thus far, my own research does not support the statement that Rev. Henry Turpin personally came from England, but rather that he was of English descent, and his line traces back to Michael Turpin who immigrated from Yorkshire, England in about 1655 and bought land in Henrico County, Virginia.
