MARION - Troy Carroll Atkinson Sr., 90, retired farmer, businessman and civic leader, died Wednesday.
Born in Marion County, he was a son of the late David Julius and Emma Waller Atkinson.
In 1953, Mr. Atkinson and his late wife were honored as "South Carolina Master Farm Family of the Year" by Clemson University Extension Service and 'Progressive Farmer' magazine. He served on the founding executive board of the Marion County Memorial Hospital, the State Board of Directors of the South Carolina Farm Bureau, the Marion County Agriculture Committee, the 4-H Club Advisory Committee, and the Marion County Forestry Board. He was a trustee of Rains High School and a member and deacon of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Mr. Atkinson was a former representative of the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Co., and the Hartsville Fertilizer Co.
He was listed in 'Who's Who in the South'.
Surviving are sons, David Julius Atkinson and Troy Carroll Atkinson, Jr. of Marion; daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Hall of Silver Spring, Md., Mrs. Miriam Donovan of Cinnaminson, N.J., Mrs. Gwendolyn McCurdy of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Olive Nissen of Marion; a sister, Miss Edith Atkinson of Mullins; 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reedy Creek Baptist Church, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
