MARION - Olive Atkinson Nissen, wife of Elgie Edward Nissen, passed away on April 9, 2019 after a long illness, holding the hand of her loving husband. She was born in Marion County on October 7, 1927, a daughter of Troy Carroll Atkinson and Evelyn Rowell Atkinson.

Olive was a graduate of Rains High School and Winthrop College where she received a BS in Food and Nutrition. After graduation, Olive was employed by Columbia Hospital as a Therapeutic Dietitian. She was a member of the American Dietetic Association. While working in Columbia, Olive met the love of her life, Elgie Nissen. They were married in 1950 and lived in Auburn, Alabama while Elgie attended the School of Veterinary Medicine. Olive was employed by Auburn University Food Service until Elgie graduated in 1953. Together they opened a veterinary practice in Bennettsville, SC. It was in Bennettsville that their first daughter, Jeannie, was born. In 1955, they bought the Marion Animal Hospital, returning to Olive’s hometown. Elgie practiced there for 55 years, and Olive was his office manager for many years. In Marion, their second daughter, Clare, and son, Ted were born.

Olive attended Reedy Creek Baptist Church during her younger years. She became Presbyterian after her marriage. She was a member of Marion Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Olive considered her role as wife and mother to be her first and foremost job in life. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren, celebrating all of their triumphs and hardships with loving care. She also enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, reading, and dancing. She was a very good cook, and she and Elgie loved to entertain at home and at Murrell’s Inlet where they co-owned a home with their dear friends for many years. Their door was always open to their children’s friends, as well. There are many fond memories of horse shows, summers at the beach, weekends at Clemson, and family celebrations.

Olive is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, David Julius Atkinson, and Troy Carroll Atkinson, Jr.; and sisters, Dorothy A. Hall and Miriam A. Donovan .
