Arthur was born in Coleshill, Warwickshire, England, to Charles Wells and Jane Smith. His parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1893 in Coleshill. Arthur sailed from Liverpool with his parents and five siblings aboard the ship "Dominion" and arrived in New York on 23 March 1908. They settled in Provo, Utah. Arthur married Cora Mabel Donaldson on 23 December 1914 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were the parents of three children before Cora died in 1918. Arthur then married Armorel Viola Hood on 21 April 1920.
The family moved from Carbon County, Utah then to Oakland, Alameda, California in 1928 where their son Carl was born. Arthur and Armorel stayed in Alameda County where they both died, but their bodies were returned to Utah to be buried in Provo. Some of their children moved to Oregon or Washington state.
