Charles Wells was born in Ullesthorpe, Leicestershire, England to Thomas Wells and Hannah Foxon. He married Jane Smith on 15 October 1878 in Overwhitacre, Warwickshire, England. They were the parents of fourteen children born in Warwickshire, England. The family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1893 and immigrated to American in 1908 aboard the ship Dominion. They settled in Provo, Utah where Charles was a merchant. After his wife Jane died in 1919, Charles married a widow, Fanny Nelson Bowen. His children settled in Oregon, Idaho and California.
