Samuel Gambler was born in Rockland Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania, a son of William and Margaretha Rebecca Bleckley Gambler (Kemler). At the age of 17, on 12 December 1861, he enlisted in Company M of the 5th U.S. Artillery. He reenlisted 12 February 1864 in the same unit and served until discharge at Fort Jefferson, Florida on 12 February 1867.

On 18 July 1868, Samuel married Elenora Haines at St. Clair, Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Aaron and Anna Mohn Haines. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Jeremiah, b. 1871; Josiah/Jessiah b. 1874; Nora b. 1878; Annabella b. 1880; Sallie b. 1882; and Emma b. 1889.

Samuel died at his home in Leesport at the age of 67 on 19 January 1912.
