Charles Bates, 82, well known Hillsdale county farmer for most of his life, passed away Tuesday afternoon at his home, 156 South Broad street. Death followed an extended Illness.
Born in Steamburg April 30, 1862, Bates was the son of the late Addison and Harriett Field Bates. When a young man he was a clerk in French's Drug store, and later worked for a year in Detroit. Aside from that his entire life had been lived in Hillsdale and vicinity. Prior to his retirement three years ago the family owned, and lived for 57 years, on the farm on Baw Beese Lake road recently destroyed by fire.
Surviving are the wife, Edith Shults Bates, to whom he had been married fifty years last February 22; two daughters, Mrs. F. E. Mensing of Toledo, Ohio and Miss Gladys Louise Bates at home, and an employe at the Buchanan company; a son Clifford H. Bates of Bucksport, Maine; a sister, Mrs. Orlan Mack, of Hillsdale; a brother; George Bates; and ten grandchildren, two of whom, Pfc. Harold Francis Mensing and Lt. Lyman Addison Bates, are over seas. Also there are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St Anthony's Catholic church with the Rev. Fr. George Fitzgerald and Fr. William Malewitz of Flint officiating and a prayer service at the home at 9 a.m. preceding the church rite. Rosary will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be in St. Anthony's cemetery. The body was entrusted to the Miner Funeral home.
