OBITUARY: Hillsdale Standard, Tuesday, December 9, 1902

Addison Bates

Addison Bates was born in Painsville, Geauga Co., Ohio, Nov. 24, 1828 and died at his home on Sharp St., this city, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1902, aged 70 years and 9 days. When a lad of elven years he removed with his parents to a farm two miles east of Hillsdale, where he spent most of his time until 1850, when he moved to Steamburg, where he purchased a farm and by honest hard labor he established a substantial home. He took up his residence in the city last June, since which time he has enjoyed a much deserved rest from farm work.

He was married Oct. 31, 1854 to Miss Harriett Fields of Newaygo Co, who died in 1874. To them were born eight children, Arthur and Edna dying in infancy, the others, Mrs. Henry Powers, Mrs. Frank Barnum, Charles of Cambria, George of Reading and Libbie and Lottie of this city, are left to mourn the loss of a quiet, unassuming disposition, a good neighbor and an upright citizen, and his presence will be missed among a wide circle of friends and relatives, but nowhere so keenly as in his home where he has received the kindest care from his daughter, Libbie and Lottie, who built the pretty new home where he died, last spring.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Ester Hunt of Syracuse, N. Y. who is now the only surviver of a family of 13 Children.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Williamson at his late home, Sunday and the remains laid to rest in the family lot in pleasant Oak Grove.
