Caroline Knab was born on January 4, 1880, in Fort Recovery, Ohio, the eldest child of Lewis and Mary (Yaeger) Knab. Lewis was a German speaking immigrant and Mary was born only four years after her German speaking parents immigrated to the States.

Caroline was baptized on February 22, 1880, in St. James Lutheran Church in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. Her siblings were
Sarah "Sadie" [Bailey], Frederick "Freddie", Emma [Myers], and Anna [Greaf].

Caroline attended Sycamore elementery school in Noble Township with her siblings. The Knab children spoke only German at home and the other children poked fun at them for not being able to speak English. The Knab children quickly learned English and never spoke German away from home after that unless their parents were with them.

Caroline died at home of malaria fever on June 18, 1895.
