Freddie Knab was born on May 9, 1883, in Indiana, the third child of Lewis and Mary (Yaeger) Knab. On June 7, 1883, Freddie was baptized in St. James Lutheran Church in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. His siblings were Seven children were born to the couple: Caroline, Sarah "Sadie" [Bailey], Emma [Myers], and Anna [Greaf],].

Freddie attended Sycamore elementery school in Noble Township with his siblings. The Knab children spoke only German at home and the other children poked fun at them for not being able to speak English. The Knab children quickly learned English and never spoke German away from home after that unless their parents were with them.

Freddie died June 17, 1896 in Jay County and was buried on June 19.
