Newman Curtis, Sr. was the son of John and Martha Newell Curtis. He married Maria Van Bergen who had Dutch roots, on June 9, 1818 in Catskill Landing, NY. They lived in Dalton, MA until 1830, then moved to Shelby Township, NY. They built the Curtis Manor House, south of Millville, which still stands 1 mile south of town Lot 6. This rock house was built from stones from the lake 12 miles north.

In the 1850's, the Curtis family bought farm land in Bremer County, Iowa, the first recorded land record in the county under LD Curtis. After 1856, the family moved to Buchanan County, northwest of Independence, Iowa.bordering the river on the west side, 1 Mi. North a 40 acre plot + 120 acres This farm was purchased for $1.25 an Acre . One son, Lyman, settled on the Bremer County land, while assisting Lora D. After the death of Newman Curtis who died from injuries suffered in a fall.

Newman and Maria had 14 children: Catherine (Nash), Lyman J., Ann E.(Whitney), William V., Harriet V. (Post), Newman, Jr., John L., Martha J. (Carl), Edwin G., Elenor A. (Hart), Lora D., Mary E. (Whaite), Henry C. and Wilbur F.
