Lyman Junnis Curtis was the son of Newman Curtis (1797-1859) and Maria Van Bergen Curtis (1799-1878). The Curtis family came from Shelby, Orleans County, New York, before moving to Iowa where they farmed in Bremer and Independence counties. The family is well documented. His siblings were: Catherine V. (Nash), Ann Elizabeth (Whitney), William Van Bergen, Harriet Newell (Post), Newman, John Lackland, Martha J.(Carl), Edwin Gates, Eleanor Aberetta (Hart), Lora Dexter, Mary Elizabeth (Whaite), Henry Clay, and Wilbur Fiske.

Lyman married Jennett Bennett on July 10, 1843, in Orleans County, New York. They went to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where they both taught school. In 1853 they came to Bremer Co., Iowa. In 1865, they moved to Buchanan County, Iowa and took over his father's (Newman Curtis) farm. Lyman served as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and Justice of the Peace. Lyman and Jennett were divorced before 1880.

Lyman and Jennett Curtis had eight children, with four surviving childhood:
Newman J. (died young), Caroline Maria (Morse), Mary Lizzie "Lou" (Foster), William H. (died young), Catherine S, "Kate" (Mirick), George W., and the twins (died at birth).

Lyman remarried on March 8, 1910 to Lucy Cram (daughter of Hewitt and Sarah Taylor Cram). Lucy was the widow of Lyman's brother, Dr. John Lackland Curtis. They had no children together. They retired to Independence, Iowa where Lyman assisted in the organization of People's National Bank.
