He married Hattie Lee Smith, daughter of Thomas Franklin Smith and Lula Martha Eldridge. They were married 67 years and had five children who survived to be adults (3 died as infants or small children.)
Monroe was a Baptist Preacher. He established a Baptist church in Anquila, MS, built Good Hope Baptist Church at Wolf Lake outside Yazoo City, MS, established Bethel Baptist Church outside of Louise, MS in the community of Seven Mile.
Monroe was also a carpenter and a blacksmith. He was a salesman for Watkins and had a regular route. (HSHorton & Myra Warren)
In his later years he served as a "fill-in" pastor. His income was then whatever offerings were taken from the congregations.
His five children were W.R., Art, Al, Helen and Billie. He has many grandchildren and great grands scattered across the country.
A granddaughter remembers: He sat on the porch in the mornings and sang hymns and rocked. He was a minister and preached "anywhere he was called."
