Lela Frances Hunt was born June 9, 1927 at Poteau, LeFlore County, Oklahoma. When she was about one year old the family moved to Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, where her father, John A. Hunt, had secured a number of mineral leases for the purpose of drilling for oil. At that time she had two older siblings, a sister and a brother.
After drilling a non-producing well, and after her father shut down operations at Marble City, the family moved to Sallisaw, Oklahoma. The family remained at Sallisaw for a few years before moving back to LeFlore County to operate a farm at the community of Page. Lela attended elementary school at Page.
At Sallisaw a sister and a brother were born, and at Page a younger sister was born. Her sister Margaret, who was born in Sallisaw, died at Page and is buried there.
In 1936 the family moved to Talihina, Oklahoma, where they operated the Commercial Hotel and where her father served in the police department. Soon after that, her father was elected justice of the peace, and the family settled on properties they held in the town. At Talihina two younger brothers and a sister were born to the family.
After graduating with honors from high school at Talihina in 1945, Lela joined her older sister in San Diego, California, where she found employment with the Bell Telephone Company. Lela's work career was with Bell Telephone where she was successfully promoted within the company. Lela eventually transferred to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and retired there about 1970.
Lela married first in 1948, and her oldest son was born in 1949. Lela married a second time about 1951, and they had a son born in 1952. When Lela's youngest son was born in 1961 her mother, Grace E. Hunt, came to live with her. In Oklahoma City, Lela married a third time about 1981, and they moved to Wister, Oklahoma, which was her residence until her death in 2000.
Lela died of lung cancer September 14, 2000 at Fanshawe, Oklahoma. Her memorial service was conducted at the Mountain View Church at Glendale, Oklahoma – a church that was founded in Indian Territory by her grandparents in 1889.
Her cremains are interred next to those of her oldest son, Lee Roy "Butch" Williams, Jr., along with other family members, here in the family plot.
