Sarah Jane Benton Kerns, born August 16, 1879, was the oldest child of Carroll County Pioneers, George Washington Benton and Nancy Elizabeth Rhodes Benton. On November 8, 1899, she married Mack Kerns in Carroll County, Arkansas. Sarah and Mack became the parents of:
Leslie Kerns (1901-1981)
Zelpha (Kerns) Carter (1904-1987)
Elsie (Kerns) Noble (1909-2004)
In 1905, Sarah Jane and Mack homesteaded land in Carroll County, Arkansas. The first claim for 120 acres was dated May 9, 1905. The Bureau of Land Management records also show that an additional 40 acres was homesteaded by Mack Kerns on June 18, 1908. One year later Mack passed away unexpectedly, when his appendix ruptured. Sarah Jane was left a widow with three young children to raise.
On December 10, 1924 she married Ellis Ownbey. Together they ran a tomato-canning factory in Blue Eye, Stone County, MO. However, they "went their separate ways" two years later in 1926; though they never divorced. Sarah reverted to using the Kerns surname after leaving Ellis.
Sarah Jane passed away May 19, 1964 from heart disease.
