This is my great grandmother. Her full name was Geneva Ellen "Neva" (Benton) Buell. According to family bible records and her death certificate her birthdate is 9 JAN 1872 and she was born in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas. Her death certificate also shows she died in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, not North Hollywood. Geneva Ellen "Nevie" (Benton) Buell is known to have been part American Indian, though the percentage and exact tribe has not been verified. Family tradition says she was either one quarter or one half Cherokee or Choctaw. Her grandson, Harold D. Buell recorded her tribe as Choctaw in his family history. I recall her as having fairly dark skin, dark eyes, and wearing Indian jewelry. Her granddaughter, Ruby (Buell) McNiel, recalls she had dark flashing eyes and real wavy hair.
