Loretta Thorpe was born in 1905 in Logan, Utah. She was the 5th of 7 sisters. Her parents were from the same area. John Henry Thorpe was born in 1863 in Wellsville, Utah and her mother, Elizabeth Ann Fife was born in 1874 in Providence, Utah. Their parents were convert immigrants from England. Loretta attended school in Logan. Her father was a plasterer. He went to Los Angeles to work for awhile due to lack of work around Logan. There was much building in the Los Angeles area. Loretta went with her family to visit him in the summer and met S. Earl Chase in the Adams Ward while there. She returned home, but they corresponded and later married in 1924. She was active in the Gleaners before marriage and was quite active in the Relief Society and the Young Women's programs after her marriage. She was well loved as a Gleaner girl advisor. Together they had seven children. She was well known as a hostess and performed in many church activities giving readings, recitations and writing poetry. She was also an exceptional cook and her meals and desserts were well known.
