Robert V. Brainard, 84, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away peacefully at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence on Sunday, May 17, 2009 after fighting kidney disease since June 2006 as well as multiple other ailments. He was born August 14, 1924 in Harper Ferry, IA the son of Edward Brainard and Margaret (Cole) Brainard. He graduated in 1943 from Winnebago High School in Winnebago, IL. He served in the United States Army during WWII from December 1943 through April 1946 with Company C, 751st Military Police Battalion; for a period of time he was stationed at Fort Custer in Battle Creek. He was employed by the Electronics Supply Office in Great Lakes, IL. where he met his wife Joanne Streicher. They were married on June 3, 1961. They moved to Washington D.C. in 1962 and moved to Battle Creek around 1963. He was employed by the Federal Government from 1951 to 1980. He retired as a cataloguer with the Federal Center's Defense Logistics Supply Center. He was also employed part-time as a courier for Regional Medical Laboratories from 1983 until 1995. He was a past member of the PNA Club. He married Joanne M. Streicher on June 3, 1961 in Waukegan, IL; however she passed away on July 11, 2007. He is survived by two sons, Robert S. Brainard of Battle Creek, Henry E. (Robin) Brainard of Brighton, TN; one daughter, Donna M. (Chris) Hutchison of Battle Creek; one granddaughter, Lyndsay (Andrew) Simpson of Russellville, AR; one grandson, Torrey Hutchison of Battle Creek; two great-grandsons, Jace and Wyatt Simpson of Russellville, AR; one brother, Clifford Brainard of Rogers, AR. He is also survived by his companion of 17 years, his little dog "Shorty." He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne of 46 years; his parents; his daughter, Kim Brainard (1976); two brothers, Edwin Brainard and Perry Brainard; and his sister, Janet Groething. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to Humane Society.
