THE PROMINENT HISTORY OF ISAAC MITCHELL THATCHER

Isaac Mitchell Thatcher (1856 - 1943), son of William M. and Rhoda (Mulvain) Thatcher; married Laura Trent in 1879. The had six children: Jennie, Fletcher, Floyd, Fred, Clarence, and Grace. His family came from Ohio in 1850 and settled in Owen County near Freedom, where some of the Thatcher descendants still live.

Isaac lived and raised his family in this area until he went to live with his youngest daughter, Grace, in Michigan in 1935. In December 1943, he died there, but was brought back to Pleasant Bethel Cemetery in Owen County for burial.

Isaac was a hard working farmer who loved the outdoors and his daily walk, which was a two mile walk back to his home place, where he first settled. He never missed his walk rain or shine! Isaac was a well known person, liked by all who knew him. He had forty grandchildren and twenty five great-grandchildren. Sons Floyd and Fletcher are the only two with descendants still living in Owen County.

Floyd Thatcher, a son (1887-1953), married Helen Scott (1892-1984) in 1908 and they had fifteen children: Gladys, Lillian, Laura, Leona, Geneva, Doris, Lois, Isaac Jr., Charles, Lewis, Clyde, and Howard, (three died as infants). His family were all raised and went to school in Owen County. They also survived the tornado in 1917. Gladys who was six remembers being terribly afraid and their mother putting them in the middle of the bed crying and praying with them.

Charles and Isaac Jr., sons of Floyd, married sisters Betty and Kathryn Fulk. Gladys, a daughter, married Ray Collenbaugh; they all still own and live on original Thatcher land.

Isaac Jr. (1911-1981) had nine children: June, Judith, Ronald, Nelda, Phyllis, Janet, Mike, Clifford, and Linda Richardson all still live in Owen County. Gladys had four children: Marjorie Zurcher, Joan Yegerlehner, Sue Borders, and Donnie. Donnie still owns ground in Owen County and lives on the Owen-Greene County line. Charles lives on the Dean School House property where the old school still stands. This is the school most of his brothers and sisters attended. Charles has two children, Charles Fred and Helen McHaley, both living in the same area. The rest of Floyd's children live in the Indianapolis-Martinsville area.

Fletcher Thatcher (1884-1950), another son of Isaac M., married Pearl Dickerson (1891-1981). They had nine children: Beatrice, Alma, Everett, Claude, Freda, Junior, Louise, and Mary. Beatrice (1907-1992) married Clayton White (1903-1993); they had two children, Ruth Evelyn Wall, and James. Ruth Evelyn still lives in Owen County.

Everett (1915-1983) married Eleanor McGuire; they had four children: Richard, Donald, Susie, and Joe; all still living in Owen County except Joe who died in 1991. Claude married Wilma Kiefover; they had two children David and Trudy Ranard; all still living in Owen County. Freda married Charles Figg (1907-1975); they had four children: Joy, Robert, Noland, and Frank; all but Joy living in Owen County. Junior married Pauline Wells; they had three children: Larry, Connie Gross, and Tracy F(T)arr; all but daughters living in Owen County. Mary (1913-1980) married Harold Dyar of Spencer. They had two children: Judith and John. Harold still lives in Spencer.

The rest of Fletcher's children moved out of state. I am sure we have left out many things in Thatcher history but we tried to mention all the families still connected to Owen County.
