They settled in Nelson, WI where his wife, Christiane,(maiden name Reinhardt) had family who had already settled in By Golly Creek, Hwy D in Nelson. The farming couple had nine children: Hulda (Mrs. Charles Johnston), Edwin Emil Hess, Gustav, Lisetta (Mrs. John Hartman), Augustina (twin who died as an infant), William Henry, August C, Albert Friedrich and John D Hess.
After Christiane died, Emil remarried to Mrs. Ernestina Sellner Dreger and had two more children: Clara and Wilhelmina Hess.

EMIL HESS
Emil Hess died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Hartman of Iron Creek, Buffalo County where he had been spending a few days, when taken sick. Death occurred last Monday.
Mr. Hess was born in Saxon, Germany, Nov 29, 1839. When but 20 years of age he left his native land and came to the United States and was a resident of Buffalo County, Wis., for a great many years.
Mr. Hess came to this city (Wabasha, MN) about ten years ago. Having lost his first wife, he married Mrs. Draegger on May 17, 1891. Besides his widow, eight children are left by his first wife, viz: Gustave Hess of Cumberland, Wis., William and John Hess of Tappen, N. Dak., August and Albert Hess of Idaho, Edwin Hess of Nelson, Wis.; Mrs. Charlie Johnson, of Minneapolis and Mrs. John Hartman of Iron Creek, Wis., and two daughters by his second marriage, the Misses Clara and Minnie Hess of this city.

EMIL FRIEDRICH HESS, who as was briefly mentioned in our last paper, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hartman in Iron Creek Valley, January 23. He was born November 29, 1840, at Heubach, Sachsen, Meiningen, Germany and came to America in 1869. In 1863 he was married to Christiane Reinhardt who died 23 years ago. To them six sons and three daughters were born. One daughter preceded him to the grave. He was again married to Ernestine Zoellner. To them two daughters were born. In 1891 he removed to Wabasha, but for three months past had lived at the home of John Hartman. Interment was had in the Deer Creek Cemetery, Wednesday, January 25th, Rev. Aeppler conducting the obsequies.
