Eugene Coplen
Eugene "Gene" COPLEN, 71, a Rochester druggist for 44 years, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the South Side district hospital in Mesa, Ariz., where he had been a patient for three weeks.
Mr. Coplen, who left Rochester to reside in Arizona five years ago, lived at 804 North Robson street in Mesa. He had been in ill health for six weeks, seriously the past three weeks. Death was attributed to lung cancer and heart failure.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home here with the Rev. Richard MITCHELL officiating, assisted by the Rochester Masonic order. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery here. The body is expected to arrive from Mesa Tuesday evening and friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Coplen was a 1907 graduate of Rochester high school, where he played center on the school's first basketball team of 1906-07. He also was a graduate of the Purdue university school of pharmacy.
His association in the local drug business actually dates from 1904, when he went to work as a boy for the late Alexander RUH at the old Blue drug store, where Baxter's now is located. After his graduation from Purdue, he was employed by the late George DAWSON in the latter's drug store at [SW corner] Main and Eighth streets, where now the Peoples Pharmacy is located.
In 1920, this firm became the Dawson and Coplen drug store when Mr. Coplen became a partner. In 1938, Mr. Dawson retired, and the store was known as Coplen and Shafer for the next six years after Dave SHAFER joined the firm. Shafer left in 1944 and Reid ERDMANN joined Mr. Coplen in the business. The store was Coplen and Erdmann drug store until it was purchased by Ernest BAXTER in April, 1953, becoming the Peoples pharmacy.
Mr. Coplen was born Jan. 15, 1887, at Rochester, the son of James and Adda ENTSMINGER COPLEN. His first marriage was March 13,1913, to Nina Blanche HARDIN of Rochester, who died in 1919. His second marriage was July 10, 1935, to Sarah Louise RYNEARSON of Rochester, who survives.
Mr. Coplen was a member of the First Baptist church, Royal Arch and Blue lodges of the Masonic order here, Scottish Rite of South Bend and of the Indiana and Arizona State Pharmaceutical Associations.
Mr. Coplen had been in retirement since going to Arizona in 1953 after the sale of his local business.
Surviving, besides the wife, are three sons, Edward Alan [COPLEN], Mesa, Ariz.; James W. and Maurice E. [COPLEN], both of Rochester; one sister, Mrs. Horatio S. AGSTER, Winter Haven, Fla., and three grandchildren. One son, Louis Stewart [COPLEN], died in infancy.
