The Steele Enterprise Obituary
Steele, Missouri
April 4, 1996

Silas Earl McCulloch was born on October 13, 1904, at Beech Bluff, Tennessee, one of nine children of John William and Susan Emma Johnson McCulloch.

He moved with his family to Caruthersville, Mo. at the age of 21.

He died Saturday, March 30, 1996 at Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems in Hayti, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 17 days.

He was a retired farmer, living most of his life in the Missouri Bootheel.

In his early years he was a member of the Marvin's Chapel Methodist Church and for more than 50 years was a member of the Church of God.

He leaves his wife of more than 67 years, Edith Hutson McCulloch; two sons: Crews McCulloch of Old Hickory, Tennessee; three daughters: Bettye Henry of Hillsboro, Missouri, Neta Thompson of Grapevine, Texas, and Kay Medlin of Caruthersville, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by five brothers: Ben, Roy, Ray, Paul, and Bob McCulloch; and two sisters: Vera Odom and Jessie Watkins. He is survived by one sister, Willie Jane Estes, of Pasadena, Texas.

For the past 27 years, Silas and Edith have lived in their home on South Ward Avenue in Caruthersville and have participated actively in their church and in community organizations. Even after his retirement he continued his interest in farming and made frequent trips to area farms to see the crops being planted, tended, or harvested.
He was an avid hunter and took great satisfaction from the fact that he went to the "deer woods" each season even until he was 90 years old. He loved people and enjoyed the associations with his family, his church, members of his "Coffee Club" and with his friends wherever he met them.

He took great delight during the later years of his life in the birds and small animals that lived around him. Even in the hospital during his final illness, he looked forward to the Martins returning to their houses in his back yard and was concerned that someone would continued to feed the squirrels that depended on the corn that he fed them each day.

He was a kind and tenderhearted man who will be sorely missed by all whether they called him "Si", "Daddy", 'Grandy", or Mr. Culloch".

Funeral services were held on April 1, 1996, at 11:00 a.m. at the Caruthersville Church of God. Rev. John Kalfayan officiated with burial at Pemiscot Memorial Gardens near Caruthersville.

Pallbearers: Don Mark McCulloch, Paul McCulloch, Marcus Henry, Jeff Henry, Richard Dorroh, and Brad Treece. Members of his "Coffee Club" served as honorary pallbearers.
